Solves — Persistent H₂S at the pond floorGram-negative, facultative chemolithotrophic–heterotrophic strains of Thiobacillus and Rhodococcus capable of oxidising sulphide and thiosulphate, together with gram-positive, spore-forming Bacillus capable of oxidising sulphide and denitrifying in the pond bottom. Rhodococcus species act as mixotrophic sulphur oxidisers, removing toxic hydrogen sulphide while processing organic waste, ammonia and nitrite at the sediment–water interface of earthen ponds.
