Optimal conditions: dissolved oxygen 0.5–2.5 ppm (optimum 2.0) · pH 7.0–8.0 (optimum 7.5) · temperature 10–40 °C (optimum 35) · heavy metals trace, preferably none · BOD:NH₃-N 10:1 · BOD:PO₄-P 100:1.
